MCC panel (motor control centers). A brief discussion and analysis.

What is the MCC panel?

MCC panel is an abbreviation for a motor control center. Chiefly, it is an accumulation of controlling electric motors in a central section. Furthermore, It inheres of multiple confined sections, with the general power bus. Each segment has its own combination starter. These starters are made up of a motor initiator, circuit breakers, and supply disconnect.

Components:

The peripherals for motor control centers may assimilate with an electrical account in order to get into the building. Various components of the MCC panel include:

  • Pushbuttons
  • Variable frequency drives
  • Programmable logic controls
  • Metering apparatus
  • Indicators

A motor control panel contains one or more erect metal case sections. Furthermore, the power bus and plug-in divisions are present. However large controllers are bounded to their origin while small controllers are flexible. This makes it convenient for examination and alimony. A contactor is present on each controller. A circuit breaker is present for protection from short-circuit problems. The disconnecting switch is present to confine the motor. It provides a path for field operation control.

Typically, MCC panels have a wide application. Although the most common places where we can find these apparatus installed are:

  • Large commercial buildings
  • Industrial buildings

Here a single operational room is practiced as a central control center, from where many different motors located all over the site are operated from a single mechanical room. Since 1950 automobile manufacturing units are somehow dependent on MCC panels. As these industries have to use an abundant amount of electric motors. It is better to place the motor control center adjoining to machinery which needs to be controlled. Indeed, it is recommended to put an air conditioner in the room in which the MCC panel is to be installed.

Voltage spectrum:

MCC panels have a wide application in low voltage motors. For illustration, a three-phase alternating current motor. Its range can vary from almost 200V to 600V. Sequentially, medium to large voltage motor ranges from almost 2000V to 1500 voltage.

Each controller of the MCC panel can be specified by a number of different options. For instance; circuit breakers, individual transformers, control alterations, pilot lamps, affixed terminal blocks, thermal relays, and solid stated various relays.  It can either be ready-made or can be assembled according to specificities in accordance with a programmable controller.

Note:

These panels, as we know, usually are placed on floor beds. Hence it is to make sure that the floor, room, or the area occupied by machinery is fire resistant. Meanwhile if needed, provide cables with fire stops.
