Food Safety

Food safety; an utmost need for the better health of our future generations

What to know about food safety?

The scientific discipline which describes food handling, preparation, and storage of food is known as food safety. The basic purpose of this discipline is to avoid any foodborne illness. The particular illness which is caused by the ingestion of a particular food is called foodborne disease. It is a potential health hazard, we need to avoid. To lessen any possible harm caused by any source of food contamination is safeguarded by the overlap of food safety and food defense.

Domains of Food Safety:

The origin of food safety comprises every area from market place to industry, even all the way to consumers. Hence it covers every activity related to food which includes production, labeling, and hygiene of the foods. As well as food additives and food residues are the major prospects of food safety. Along with this, all this discipline takes care of all policies complementary to the export or import of every type of food.

Attempts to diminish disease carriers from food:

With the development in every field of science, food safety is now on another verge of triumph. Thus we know well today that food poisoning is preventable up to every extent.  But this is not reachable because of a lot of personnel involved in the chain of the whole process. Also, countries implement rules and regulations and enforce them to ensure the mitigation of the transfer of pathogens, according to their level of development.

Food safety and WHO:

Food safety has got a voice on international platforms too. Therefore, the World Health Organization is paying special attention to the alarmingly rising issue of food hygiene. Five key aspects of food hygiene by WHO comprises the following statements:

  1. Limit the contamination of food (pathogens, circulating from people, pets, etc)
  2. Sever cooked food from raw food products
  3. Food must be cooked appropriately to make sure that there is no pathogen left (time and temperature)
  4. Stock food at a proper temperature (enhanced shelf life)
  5. To make food use safe water and impregnable raw material

Major regulations and concerns of food safety are as follows

  • Genetically modified food (GMF)
  • Novel foods
  • Agricultural practices
  • Animal husbandry practices
  • Manufacturing practices

Food contamination:

Food is contaminated when any such substance enters food that was not an ingredient or says was corrupt. It may happen in any process of the whole supply chain which consists of production, transportation, packaging, storage, trade, and cooking process. Food contamination can be of the following three types:

  1. Physical contamination

Any foreign particle or object is a source of physical contamination. For instance: hairs, nails, dirt.

  • Biological contamination

If food is contaminated by any element related to biological species, may it be human, animals, microorganisms it will be a biological contaminant. Like saliva, blood, fecal matter.

  • Chemical contamination

Any natural or artificial chemical agent involves in this group. For example drugs, herbicides, food additives.

Good food and safe food are among the basic human needs and rights. Thus we need to make sure that cleanliness and proper sanitation are promoted at every level for a better food supply.
